“I got Zoie’s voicemail,” Alex said. “Let’s run by the bakery real quick so I can talk with her in person.”

Since it was nearing lunchtime on a Saturday, the bakery was busy with customers. My stomach growled again as I inhaled the sweet aroma of chocolate, sugar, and wheat.

“I’m getting a donut,” I grumbled.

“Maybe try for a chicken salad sandwich,” Alex said. “It might last longer than sugar.”

I frowned. “Who are you? Have you ever known me to choose chicken over sugar?”

He laughed and shook his head. “You’re one of a kind, Loci.”

When we finally made it to the counter, I decided I was hungry enough to do both items. I ordered a chicken salad sandwich on a croissant roll and a coconut donut.

“What did we do to deserve to have you two gracing us twice in one day?” Serena teased as she retrieved my donut out of the display case.

“I need to speak to Zoie a minute,” Alex said.

Something in his tone must have alerted Serena because she nodded and stuck her head through the passthrough window into the back kitchen. A few seconds later, Zoie hurried over to us.

Alex quickly told her about Izzy.

“I knew she was upset last night,” Zoie said, “and I just let her go home alone. What kind of friend am I?”

Alex gave her a one-arm hug. “It’s not your fault, Zoie. She just needs some space.”

“It’s those girls,” Zoie said. “They really tease her at school. I do my best to stop them, but I’m not always around.”

“I’m sorry to hear that,” Serena said. “Izzy seems like a sweet girl.”

“She is,” Zoie said. “That’s the problem—at least according to the girls who tease her. Izzy talks about taking over the museum when she gets older, loves hanging around her mom and dad.” She shrugged. “Just not typical. Ya know? And so the kids at school tease her. She thought when she moved to the island she’d finally be accepted. She could finally be public about being a vampire, but the kids all still make fun of her because she’s a little quirky.”

“Honey, why don’t you take the rest of the day off and go try to find Izzy?” Serena suggested. “That is, if it’s okay with your dad? I don’t want to step on toes or anything, but Izzy needs you more than we do here at the bakery.”

“Dad?” Zoie asked.

Alex kissed Zoie’s temple. “You go drive around and see if you can’t spot her. Maybe she’s at a place you guys like to hang out? Look in those places first, but be careful. We still have a killer on the loose.”

Zoie grinned. “Shayla taught me how to call up energy a couple weeks ago. If I need to zap someone, I can do that now.”

I felt Alex’s eyes bore into me, so I did my best to memorize the number of ceiling tiles above me. The truth was, Zoie was advancing far quicker with her magic than I ever thought possible. Pretty soon, she’d no longer be considered a novice witch.
